Do you ever have those moments where the things you need to get done are more than you can bear? Do you ever feel defeated just moments after the day begins? Are you struggling to just think straight when you have something like this going on in your house at the very same time? Or is this just happening in my house?
As single mothers, I think we can all relate! We begin by thinking about that mountain of tasks, and then we start thinking about the sad fact that nobody is beside us to help with them. What are we going to do?
Well, I can tell you one thing that helps immensely when you face these moments. Say to yourself these 3 words: In. The. Present. Say aloud, “In the present. I will live in the present. I will live in this present moment, not looking to the past or the future. I will simply live in this moment, giving it the best I can.”
How does this work practically?
- When you feel that overwhelm, either grab your task manager, or a piece of paper and write down what must get accomplished today. Just focus on today’s tasks, not tomorrow’s.
- Now, look over the list. Must ALL of this get done today? Are there 2 or 3 things you can remove and do tomorrow?
- Next, plan out when each task will get completed. Plan out WHO will complete it. How many can you delegate to one or more of your children? Now, set that list aside, and get back to your work at hand.
The secret to lifting the overwhelm is to take 2-3 minutes to plan out this one day. When you’ve got a plan, your brain feels a little lighter, your mood lifts and you can focus on the task in front of you.
In my next post, we will discuss a different plan that will help you to prevent the overwhelm before it starts.
