You might not have any interest in starting. You might believe that just getting through the day is a major accomplishment (let me just stop here and say, it is ladies! When we do it all, getting through the day is a major feat!)
I’m talking about starting something new and different. Like really starting something. Like taking a college course. Like getting serious about an exercise regimen. Like starting to use the word NO with your kids and really meaning it. Like dreaming about your life and how you want to design it.
Everything Starts Small
See this little plant against a trellis? This is the side of my house where I just planted this sweet little rose a couple of weeks ago. It’s going crazy, and yes, I’m quite proud! Everyday I go out to look at its leaves and marvel at how many brand new leaves that have appeared overnight. Don’t worry. You’ll see a picture when we have our first bloom! Something else you can’t see from this picture. There is a white pipe for my sprinkler system literally a few inches away from the side of the house. I barely had enough room to plant this, but plant it I did and it’s taking off like a weed! This rose has no idea of the difficulty that pipe could cause. The plant continues putting out its roots no matter that the pipe is there or not. This begs the question,
Do we hesitate from living a life we love by allowing fear to keep us frozen in the past? Or do we live our dreams regardless of what difficult circumstances or people are around us?
More important than this rose, we are all lovely roses that are waiting to bloom. Every single thing that is amazing in life starts out as a small seed in someone’s mind or a small idea or circumstance. Just like I work to make sure this rose has water and sunlight to grow, you must tend to your tender shoots until you are strong enough to grow and develop into a tall tree that can no longer be swayed.
A New Beginning
Starting again. Giving life another chance. It can be scary, huh? Question one should be, who are you? Do you even know? What do you love? What do you enjoy? What types of people do you want to hang out with (other than your kids, too!) What are you good at? What are your strengths? What do you get excited about?
Let go of what is hindering you, single mom. Let go of what a few people have said about you. Let go of your past mistakes and failures. Be like the rose. It doesn’t know it can’t grow as tall as my trellis. I know the rose will do its best because that is what it is designed to do! I want to do my best, too. I owe it to myself, you owe it to yourself, to not hide behind the shadows of past fear and difficulty. This is your opportunity to shine as you’ve never shown before. Know you who want to be, and make no apologies for it. Do not give away your life! God gave you this life, not someone else!
